System Notes

This system is the Wide Area Radio System (WARS) used by a number of emergency services in the Lower Mainland of BC.

Operations and dispatch are handled out of ECOMM at 3301 E. Pender Ave. in Vancouver.

There are a number of different transmitter sites providing coverage in various municipalities. System ID's are generally broken up by municipality, and there may be more than one transmitter in a system (simulcast).

The majority of the traffic on the system is ProVoice digital and cannot currently be monitored (unless you have a ProVoice radio). The fire departments have remained analog and can be monitored with an EDACS TrunkTracker or ETrunker.

Site Location Information

One disadvantage of simulcast systems is that when you are on the fringe of the coverage area, your receiver performance will suffer due to the "capture effect" of FM receivers.

You may be able to improve your signal strength by using a Yagi antenna and pointing it at one of the transmitter sites. By using the selectivity and gain of the antenna, you may be able to null out enough of the other site's signal to improve your received signal.

However, in order to take advantage of this, you need to know where to point your antenna.

The information presented below has been gathered from various sources, including the TAFL from Industry Canada, as well as good old direction finding techniques. The transmitter sites are often co-located with other services, so finding the sites is usually straight forward.

Use the addresses and co-ordinates to figure out your bearing from your location to point your antenna in the right direction. Good luck!

Surrey

Surrey Fire halls are paged out with a DTMF code prior to the call. This DTMF code is the same as the hall number, with leading 0\'s to make up a three digit number. For example, Hall 1 gets paged out with 001, while Hall 15 gets paged out with 015.

The DTMF code 789 is used as a "all halls" broadcast code. It can be heard just before the morning briefing broadcast.

Surrey Fire still simulcasts Tac-1 (Dispatch) on 154.310MHz. This is primarily for the volunteers benefit. Surrey Fire is a "composite" department, that has both full-time and volunteer staff. Page-outs (2 tone) go out on this frequency to alert the volunteers to respond as required.

This is why you will hear things like "Pump 2 with driver and first aid", this is a volunteer unit reporting their status to dispatch when they man a truck for a response.

You will also hear a "stand-by callout only" for certain halls, this is in conjunction with a page-out to bring in volunteer staff to the hall in event that further equipment is required at the hall or for coverage.
