Maui County officials have signed a contract with EFJohnson of Denton, Texas, to completely overhaul this TRS in two phases, that when finished, will bring all first responders onto one united interoperable platform.
Phase One of the project, calls for the retuning and licensing of all radio frequencies to become compliant with Nextel rebanding requirements, as mandated by the FCC. When completed, all radio communications will shift from their current 866-868 MHz frequencies, down 15 MHz, to the 851-854 MHz band. This will bring this TRS in full compliance with all FCC regulations.
The second phase, will include the complete installation of Project 25 compliant EFJohnson Ascend portable and mobile radios. Likewise, the entire infrastructure will overhauled, and Project 25 CAI repeaters, will replace the Multi-Net system that is currently in place. In addition, some sensitive communications will be encrypted.
The contract from EFJohnson, Inc., valued at $5.5 million dollars, will allow the system to be built as a "SmartZone" TRS; thus, ensuring adequate coverage across the entire county. When completed in late 2008, this new Project 25 TRS, will bring all first responders together on one common interoperable platform.
